Touring the Fire Station

Kayla's class got to go on two field trips this year. She missed the first one (we were at McCall), but fortunately she made it to the second one. The permission slip didn't ask for any parents; so I didn't plan on going. In fact I arranged for a play date for Allie. Tuesday afternoon Kayla begged me to go. I checked with the teacher, and then Allie, Lindsey, and I were able to join Kayla's class in seeing the Fire Station.
After a little bragging session, the fireman showed a video about some of the accidents and fires they've responded to. Afterwards, there was a Q & A. I learned that the reason a fire engine parks at an angle really in the way of traffic at an accident scene is so if a car were to head towards the accident, it would bounce off the fire engine and avoid hitting those working at the scene.
Next Kirk (from our ward) took us on a tour. The kids really liked seeing the gym, but they were more impressed by the TV and kitchen. I think they'd like to watch TV at work someday. Another thing I learned in this room was there is a big red button next to the door. When the fire fighters are cooking a meal and the alarm comes through all they have to do is hit the button on the way out and all power is cut to the kitchen area (minus the fridge). Could I install one of those for shutting off lights on the way out the door?

After seeing the Cummin's Engine powering a generator and the basketball hoop, we got to see the fire engine. The kids LOVED it! They really liked getting to climb inside. Also there is a green ATV in the picture. These fire fighters cover a huge area. A lot of it is desert and mountains.

The fire fighters made fast friends as they handed out hats and goody bags full of tattoos, coloring book, crayons, stickers...
